AIN’T NO RHYME OR REASON By D. Johnson It’s just luck, purely accidental Just luck, good or detrimental Just luck, nothing supernatural Just luck, don’t you know shit happens When there ain’t no rhyme or reason at all Keep the faith, but lose the religion It’s not fate or divine intervention That make for unusual situations God sakes! Don’t you know shit happens When there ain’t no rhyme or reason at all No hoodoo, no voodoo Sub-continental gurus Say it’s all written in the stars No Virgo, Aries, Geminis or fairies Or Jupiter lining up with Mars It makes no sense. It’s coincidental No defence, purely incidental Present tense, something existential Common sense says you know shit happens When there ain’t no rhyme or reason all

AMERICAN DREAM By D. Johnson Fries and a Coke, 5 sugars in my coffee and cream I can eat a sundae even on a Monday I’m living the American dream It’s just me and my own 1 wife, six kids and a 30 year loan Things aren’t as bad as they seem When you’re living the American dream Living the American dream Living the American dream I’m alright. I’m living the American dream I go to church. I read the Bible. Good news is all I want to find And the world and all its trouble Lie just outside the county line. I got my guns. I got my pick up. I wonder when I’m ever gonna wake up I must confess. I’ve been blessed I’m living the American dream I love God. I love my country. I love the flag that’s waving in my yard. I’m poor, but if I stay healthy It doesn’t matter that we’re doing it hard Cause I got fries and a Coke 5 sugars in my coffee and cream…

Broken 03:59
BROKEN By D. Johnson I accept the fact you’re leaving I understand the reasons why I appreciate how hard it was to tell me But, please, won’t you think of me some time Don’t leave me broken Let me keep just a little piece of my pride Did I count for nothing Or did I make a difference in you life? Do you know how much you’ve touched me How you’ve changed my point of view? Did you learn from me anything? I know that I learned so many things from you. So, good luck and salutations I really mean it. I wish you the best Pretty soon this all will be history But it’s the little things I’ll never forget

THE CHURCH OF THE SACRED STEEL By D. Johnson How good it feels, how good it feels On a Friday night at the House of God In the Church of the Sacred Steel As the folks file in to take their seat The band is playing something soft and sweet In reverence, the faithful whisper low And smile to each other and nod “hello” The Bible’s read as the crowd “amens” Then the beat picks up. That’s when the show begins And the preacher shouts and the sisters sing High above it all you can hear the cry of the heavenly strings How good it feels… The people wave their arms and start moving their feet Every man, woman and child are up out of their seat It ain’t no Georgia Crawl, no dosey doe They’re just doing their thing out on the chapel floor An the preacher shouts… How good it feels…

I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU BABY By D. Johnson I’m in love with you, Baby. Honey, can’t you tell? Stupid grin on my face, I don’t look so well I don’t know what to say. I don’t know what to say I don’t eat. I haven’t slept for days I’m walking in a cloud, wrapped in a purple haze I don’t know what to say, Baby, I’m running out of time So I’m gonna have to hand you that same old line I’m in love with you, Baby. I’m in love with you I’m in love with you, Baby. I thought you knew I’m the opposite of cool, criminally shy I wear my heart on my sleeve, so you know I can’t lie But I don’t know what to say… You can have me arrested. I’ll admit to the crime I’ll plead guilty of not speaking my mind I don’t know what to say…

GOING DOWNTOWN By D. Johnson Don’t you think it’s about time you were leaving the neighbourhood And start learning about the places that you’ve never understood? You’re a man now You ought to be doing all the things you should Stop hanging around shopping at the local store You’re never gonna find exactly what she’s looking for You got to go downtown Believe me, there’s so much more You got to go downtown. Keep your eyes on the road, ‘Cause once you see those city sights You’ll want to go downtown every night You’re gonna see things down there that you’ve never seen before. Step right up. Stick your head right through that door Now you’re downtown and you ain’t no child no more You’ll be on your own, down there all alone But you can’t go home until the shopping’s done So don’t you think it’s about time you were leaving the neighbourhood And started learning about the places that you’ve never understood? Now you’ve been downtown and the future is looking good

Sleepy Head 02:56
SLEEPY HEAD By D. Johnson I didn’t wake up this morning I’m still lying in my bed Threw the clock out of the window Went back to sleep again No, I didn’t wake up this morning Had the black cat on my chest I couldn’t move a muscle. I’m such a sleepy head. I can hear the sounds of the street outside The honking of the horns, little babies cry Everyone’s going somewhere They’ve got somewhere to get I ain’t going nowhere cause I’m such a sleepy head Please, don’t call the doctor. There ain’t nothing wrong with me Just give me a couple more hours. I’ll be as good as I can be I used to wake up in the morning at the break of dawn Jump right out of bed and put the coffee on Now, I got the world on my shoulders My feet are made of lead I don’t what’s the matter. I’m such a sleepy head If they think I’m missing, please don’t tell them I’m dead Just tell them I didn’t wake up this morning. I’m such a sleepy head

Highway 101 03:25
HIGHWAY 101 By D. Johnson I was born in Tucson, Arizona But we didn’t stick around that long Wound up in Southern California A little county on the 101 At 16, I was cruising down Main Street Friday nights, on the downtown run At 18, I was working in the city Travelling up and down the 101, Highway 101 In L.A. you’re just a drop in the bucket You don’t matter to anyone Get in my car and I’m King of the Road Heading north, along the 101, Highway 101 From L.A., it’s just a day to San Francisco One more to Oregon. Before I know it, I’m sailing through Seattle Doing 60 on the 101, Highway 101 I grew up in Southern California But I didn’t stick around that long Hit the road and I kept on going You can blame it on the 101, Highway 101

RUBY, RED LIPS By D. Johnson You can lie to me. Tell me anything you want to You can deny that he ever meant to harm you Tell me that he’s gentle. Tell me that he’s kind I’ll believe it’s true if you want me to But you can’t hide from me, even though you’re distant You’re a stranger, now. Now you look so different You button up your collar. You’ve even cut your hair What’s that heavy, dark mascara, all the powder that you wear and those… RUBY, RED LIPS… Beautiful, you were so beautiful in spirit You could’ve had anyone. Now, it hurts so bad to hear that These days you look so tired. These days you look so thin Everybody asks, “Why does she stay with him?” But, you can lie to me. Tell me anything you want to You will always be someone that I looked up to The one who took the chances, the one who was so strong Not this tragic clown with all this make up on And those… RUBY, RED LIPS…

about

Dan's Diner Trio Sydney, Australia

Dan’s Diner began performing blues, gospel and 50’s rock ‘n roll. When Dan Johnson wrote the songs for the album he maintained the spirit and simplicity of that bygone era but with contemporary lyrics.

With just bass, “drum” and the Dan’s unique, finger-style guitar and slide, the sound is full and fresh. Dan added electric slide to some of the tracks.
